Every non-profit organization survives with the help of volunteers who
serve in numerous ways. The Grand Prairie Wellness Center is no
exception! Without our volunteers, we simply couldn't serve as many
patients or help as many people.
Whether it's the front desk helpers or one of the terrific medical and
dental professionals we work with -- we simply couldn't do what we do
without YOU!!
Volunteer Spotlight recognizes a particular volunteer and the types of
service they provide -- making a real difference in our lives and the lives
of those we serve. We hope you enjoy this new feature of our web site as
well as the stories of those whose lives touch ours while helping others.
-- Chuck Poffenbarger, Board President and Grants Coordinator
I am Elizabeth Anderson, an 83 year old volunteer at
the Grand Prairie Wellness Center. I am a native of
Sioux City, Iowa, but have lived here since l952 when
my husband got a job here as an aeronautical
engineer.
I first learned about the Wellness Center when a
friend was involved in the formation of it.
We were volunteers at the hospital in Grand Prairie
until it closed.
I have been a volunteer at the Center since it first
opened nine years ago in 2001.
Most of the time I work at the front reception desk
greeting people as they come in. I have them register
and take their chart to the appropriate room. If they
have not filled out the papers to receive our services,
I help them do that.
I also answer the phone and do filing when I am not
otherwise occupied.
We do have training sessions--to be sure we
understand our duties and the system we have set up
at the Center. Also, help is always available on the
day you volunteer.
I work one day a week for 4 or 5 hours. Also, I'm on
standby if they need me at other times.
The reason why I enjoy volunteering very much is for
the satisfaction it gives me of helping others. Also, I
love being out of the house and among other people.
There really isn't anything I don't like about
volunteering. Some jobs are not as interesting or fun,
but they're necessary.
It gives me a great lift when I see a scared child come
in and see the dentist perhaps for the first time and
later they leave with a big smile and a new
toothbrush and toothpaste.
Some of the clients come in so dejected and
desperate--
and when they realize that help is available, they feel
a burden is lifted.
I always tell friends of the joy of volunteering and
urge them to join in --
as it makes a big difference in your life.
The people you work with are all happy, productive
and caring.
The Center needs more exposure and getting some
article in the newspaper would be a great place to
start.
Volunteering is good for the soul and I feel that
anyone who volunteers receives more from the effort
than they give.
